What is the difference between an antibiotic ointment and cream?

The cream is water based and soaks into the skin faster but doesn't occlude the wound from the air. Which helps the healing process along a bit faster.

The ointment is petroleum based and occludes air from getting to the wound bed, lengthening healing and recovery. What is the difference between an antibiotic ointment and cream?
Plantar's wart ......ouch.....was it painful ? but anyway it is self-limiting and harmless.

Is he sexually active ? not HPV infection isnt it ? ( human papillomavirus type 1 ,2 and 63). Anyway , the water base cream might be easily to be dissolved under wet condition , while the ointment is non-water base and more condensed .Does the ointment contain sylicilic acid ? Its over the counter isnt it ? Anyway, i dont know what the reason might be , they should be both effective. Some contain sylicilic acid, others might contain trichloroacetic acid. Maybe the podiatrist thought one is more effective for your son than the other.

And warts are commonly shedded and seeded in wet places , most commonly the bathroom where they can survive for an extensive period of time, so they are very highly contagious. Limit the spreading is necessary. Though its more commonly affected kids than adults. What is the difference between an antibiotic ointment and cream?
Generally speaking, you get more bang for the buck when you buy a cream. That is to say, you get a little jar when you buy a cream. You get a teensy little tube when you buy ointment. So you just get more product when it's a cream. The stuff itself is not all that different, in my experience. But why pay a lot of money for a little tiny tube, use it up in two or three days, then have to go out and pay the same amount all over again, when you could pay pretty much the same amount just once for the jar of cream and have enough for two weeks? Makes sense to me!
One is more oilier than the other. Oil helps to moisten your skin this way the wart is easier to take off and leave a minimal or no scar at all. Creams dry up too fast and leave your skin looking flaky. That is reason why the podiatrist told you to use an antibiotic ointment instead of a cream. Think about those ointments your great-grandparents, grandparents or parents used, now think of the smell. But today they do not smell that bad.

I hope this has helped you in some kind of way.
OK no idea Janet here.

But if you notice, ancient cultures (Egyptians etc) always refer to ointment......do not think petroleum jelly was used then but some kind of grease (maybe cocoa butter and some other natural products)..never cream.

So cream is kind of new......

Am sorry I do not have any idea regarding your son's condition...
The antibiotic is suspended in petroleum jelly in the ointment and in a water based cream in the cream
cream might be more easily absorbed than ointment. ointment is kind of ike petroleum jelly...very greasy. this is probably the reason
Antibiotics kills bacteria. If they both are antibiotic , there is not much difference, just a personal choice.
I can only guess that the different is ointment is in liquid fprm while cream is ';solid';...
The former has the ability to fite and, hopefully, kill infection.
